The song An Old Christmas Card was written by Vaughn Horton.

“An Old Christmas Card” was recorded October 19, 1962 at “Little Victor”, RCA’s nickname for its Nashville studio in the old days (it wasn’t dubbed “Studio B” until several years later).

Composer Vaughn Horton wrote this tune especially for Bing Crosby back in 1948, but Bing never got around to recording it, so the song lay dormant until Jim Reeves discovered it while searching for material for his 1962 holiday offering “Twelve Songs Of Christmas”.

“An Old Christmas Card” was a sentimental favorite from the album, and Jim liked it so much that he convinced RCA to release it as a single the following year.

The recording features a striking high soprano by Winifred Breast on the vocal intro and chorus, and an unusual arrangement which has Jim singing in unison with the Anita Kerr Singers, which was rarely done on Jim’s records. The result, as you’ll hear, turned out wonderfully.

Jim Reeves of course recorded the most memorable version of it in 1963, and done a remarkable job on it, but this version is also special, as it’s the original recording of it, done July 8th 1949 by Ray Smith, ( 1918-1979 ).

The photo’s in the video Friends shows Ray as a young man holding his Guitar, and the group photo also shows him later as one of the Pinetoppers singing group.. That photo is interesting indeed, as it shows Vaughn Horton the author of this song holding his Mandolin, & his Brother Roy Horton standing next to him.

Standing next to Roy is Rusty Keefer another songwriting legend, & Ray Smith the man singing this tune is holding the booklet in his hands.

Both of the Horton Brothers were inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame each for their own achievements, and Vaughn Horton himself is also in the Nashville Songwriters Hall Of Fame.
